VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – A 30th Medical Group technician inserts a needle into a vial of influenza vaccine at the Point of Distribution (POD) in the Installation Deployment Readiness Cell here Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012. Active duty Airmen reported to the POD in an exercise simulating mass immunization against anthrax, and base authorities used the opportunity to distribute this year’s real world influenza vaccine. The POD distributed Skittles candy representing the anthrax prophylaxis to over 1,900 Airmen and then vaccinated over 1,500 Airmen for influenza, raising the wing’s flu vaccination rate to over 90%. The purpose of the exercise was toevaluate the wing’s response to a public health emergency by testing the 30th Medical Group’s ability to stand up a POD and rapidly distribute countermeasures. SANTA MARIA, Calif. – Over 250 local veterans gather with event volunteers at the Santa Maria Fairground for the Santa Barbara County Veterans Stand Down here Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. The Veterans Stand Down was organized to provide a single place for homeless and nearly-homeless veterans to receive a wide variety of personal assistance. The free services for veterans included hot showers, haircuts, new clothing, medical and dental check-ups, financial assistance, legal services, family support, Department of Veterans Affairs information and much more.
