12/8/2011 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  --
Members from the Vandenberg Spouses' Club kicked off the annual VSC Holiday Cookie Express here Dec. 7.

About 25 volunteers bagged more than 5,000 donated cookies to be given to Airmen living in the dormitories on base.

Cookie bags were decorated by Crestview Elementary School children on base and Vandenberg Air Force Base Homeschoolers.

"We have seen a wonderful outpouring of donations this season," said Dawn Kirts, spouse of Col. Kelly Kirts, 30th Mission Support Group commander. "We really appreciate it and hope we will see this kind of support next year."

Base first sergeants will deliver cookies Dec. 7-9.

"It makes me feel great because we are bringing a little bit of Christmas to their door," said Elizabeth Mason, spouse of Master Sgt. Keith Mason, 30th Communications Squadron. "I hope it shows them that they are not alone this season."

Kirts notes that many base members and volunteers have worked to make this event possible.

"Thank you to Crestview Elementary students and base home-school students for decorating the cookie bags," she said. "I would also like to extend a special thank you to Carolyn Lander, Master Sgt. Edward Colquhoun, Melanie Tonguet, Elizabeth Mason, Liz Wendling, Lisa Spencer and Laurel Ward for making our Cookie Express such a huge success. Thank you to the Vandenberg Community for baking so many wonderful cookies for our Airmen."
