8/21/2012 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- It's that time of year again; get your crayons and markers ready, because classes are scheduled to begin for Vandenberg students Aug. 22.

Students from both Manzanita Charter and Crestview Elementary Schools will starts school during morning commute times and safety is a big concern as the new school year approaches.

Parents need to say a swift good-bye when dropping their children off in the parking lot to avoid a backup, said Kathy Grbac, Manzanita Charter School manager. Students should arrive early to orient themselves with their new classrooms.

At this time of year parents should remind their children about back-to-school safety.

"Cars are not always aware of your children," said Tech. Sgt. Hyrum Lowder, a 30th Space Wing Safety specialist. "Teach your child to stop before a driveway and see if there is a car coming their way."

Parents and children are urged to remember fog safety.

Morning fog creates low visibility for both children and drivers, said Lowder. Children should wear bright clothing on foggy mornings.
