7/11/2012 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Vandenberg Fire Department will host its annual Kids Fire Camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 here at Fire Station 2, Building 10660.

There are only 50 slots available for military, Department of Defense civilian and contractor children 8 to 12 years old.

"Children are 20 percent of our population and 100 percent of our future. Nothing is more important than training and educating them to become safer, smarter and better citizens," said Mark Farias, Vandenberg Fire Department fire chief.

The day's events will include a station tour, showing the children where and how firefighters live during their 24-hour shifts; a chance to extinguish a small fire with a fire extinguisher; a chance to learn how to identify and report common fire safety hazards around the house; learning the importance of using 911, stop drop and roll and how to escape a smoke filled house; an obstacle course that gives children a chance to use some of the many firefighting tools and finally a chance to burn off any remaining energy by playing in a fire engine bounce house.

Parents are highly encouraged to share the day with their children. This is a great opportunity for family members to learn fire safety together.

Parents can sign up their children at the Fire Prevention Office in Fire Station 2, Building 10660, or by calling 606-4680. Please sign up early as spots fill up quickly. Lunch consisting of a hot dog, chips and a drink will be provided to the children at no cost.

The Vandenberg Chapel is co-sponsoring the event.
