Flags flown at half-staff to honor AF general

4/2/2012 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- By order of the Secretary of the Air Force, the flags on base are flying at half-staff April 2 in honor of retired Air Force Gen. William Moore, who died March 18, 2012; his funeral service is scheduled April 2 at the USAF Academy Cemetery, USAF Academy, Colo.
General Moore was born in Waco, Texas, in May 1920. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1940 as an Aviation Cadet and graduated in May 1941 with a commission as a Second Lieutenant. During World War II, General Moore commanded the 777th Bombardment Squadron, 464th Bombardment Group Fifteenth Air Force, in Italy, logging 35 combat missions in B-24 Liberators. After World War II, he served as Commandant of Students at the Army Air Forces Aircraft Observer and Bombardier School at Mather Field, California. During the Korean War, General Moore commanded the 3rd Bombardment Group based at Kunsan, Korea, from where he led 65 combat missions in B-26 medium bombers. In 1976, General Moore became the Assistant Vice Chief of staff, before completing Active Duty at Scott AFB, IL as the Commander in Chief of the Military Airlift Command.
General Moore retired from the USAF in 1979.
