8/18/2011 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE Calif. -- The beginning of the school year for children attending Vandenberg area schools is Aug 24.
As the start of the school year draws near, base agencies have come together to make changes to Crestview Elementary School's drop-off and pick-up procedure which will be in effect on the first day of school.
"We are implementing minor changes by allowing parents to drop off their kids on Utah Avenue and adding an additional crossing guard," said Tech. Sgt. Hyrum Lowder NCO in charge of ground safety. "Our hope, by opening up the fire lane on Utah Avenue, is to alleviate some of the congestion."
To alleviate further congestion, a through lane has been opened on Utah Avenue for one way traffic heading in a northeast direction.
"This will allow for two exits for traffic during drop-off and pick-up hours, one from the stop sign through the horseshoe, the other exiting Utah Avenue," said Lowder.
Base agencies have also agreed to eliminate parking on the right-hand side of horseshoe to become a drop-off only zone.
Parking on the left-hand side of the horse shoe area is still available.
"Parents should give themselves more time on their commute," said Dr. Ken Falk Crestview Elementary School principal. "Slow down and be watchful of the kids, for they have been off for several months."
