8/1/2011 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Base leadership went undefeated against Vandenberg's Company Grade Officers' Council after two volleyball matches held at the gym here, Building 9005, July 29.
Vandenberg's CGOC and base leadership mimicked the traditional Air Force Stars versus Bars, an event in which generals officers face off against Air Force lieutenants in a friendly athletic competition, to create a similar mentorship opportunity at Vandenberg called Birds versus Bars.
With the rules set at 25 points for the win, the game began.
In the first match, base leadership started off strong and the CGO team struggled to fight back. As the game came to a close, base leadership idled at 24 points while the CGO team climbed back within three points in five minutes. However, it was not enough for the CGO team. Base leadership made the final point and won the game 25 to 21.
Base leadership dominated in the second game, winning 25-19.
"It was a lot of fun to have our colonels and chiefs school us in volleyball," said 2nd Lt. Brandon Jacobson, event coordinator. "It's probably due to their wisdom and patience, something junior officers may have yet to learn."
The CGOC is a private organization that offers junior officers the opportunity for professional development and volunteerism while also acting as liaisons for the base's leadership.
Similar competitions are scheduled to occur quarterly between the CGOC and base leadership.
