4/15/2011 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- Team Vandenberg launched an Atlas V from Space Launch Complex-3 here April 14 at 9:24 p.m. PDT.

It was the fourth Atlas V processed at Vandenberg and the 605th overall Atlas mission in U.S. history.

"The wind cooperated with us this evening enabling us to launch without compromising public safety," said Col. Richard Boltz, 30th Space Wing commander. "Without a doubt, every launch is a major feat, and I'm extremely proud of Team Vandenberg for yet another job well done."

We couldn't drive up to VAFB Thursday evening. On a whim I stepped outside on the patio to see if the Atlas V was visible. My kids laughed at me - until I saw the rocket speeding south over the Pacific. It was impressive Thank you Vandenberg. Keep launching

I actually saw this beautiful fireball in the sky. It was bright traveling at a moderately fast pace. It had a trail of cinder-like ash. It was beautiful and awesome... and then Poof. It vanished. Within 5 minutes the sonic boom. Just awesome
