Officer sentenced to dismissal from Air Force for drug involvement

30th Space Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate

11/10/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- A second lieutenant assigned to the 392nd Training Squadron here was sentenced to a dismissal from the United States Air Force after he pled guilty to wrongfully using and distributing cocaine at a general court-martial held at Vandenberg Oct. 26-27, 2010. The case was heard before a military judge alone.

2nd Lt. Benjamin C. McKinney pled guilty before a military judge to wrongful use and distribution of cocaine, both a violation of Article 112a, Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Capt. Brian Mason and Capt. Aimee Haney, the government trial counsel, presented the evidence to the judge, while Capt. Thomas Alford defended Lieutenant McKinney. Maj. W. Shane Cohen was the military judge whose sentence for the young officer, along with the dismissal, included 58 days confinement and a reprimand.

Court-martial proceedings take place in the courtroom at the Vandenberg Air Force Base legal office in Building 10577.
