Vandenberg responds to Bear Creek wildfire
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – The Bear Creek Fire here was estimated to be nearing 150 acres in size and growing at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, according to 30th Space Wing officials. The fire is expected to continue to grow while the Vandenberg Fire Department assesses the most advantageous and safe area to fight the fire effectively, according to a spokesperson from the department. 10/28/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- The Bear Creek Fire here was estimated to be nearing 150 acres in size and growing at 2 p.m. today, according to 30th Space Wing officials.

The fire is expected to continue to grow while the Vandenberg Fire Department assesses the most advantageous and safe area to fight the fire effectively, according to a spokesperson from the department. Winds ranging from 18 to 30 miles per hour are a concern, according to base officials.

The fire broke out at 1 p.m. on south base near Space Launch Complex 3.

Portions of south base were evacuated and access was limited to emergency essential personnel according to officials.

Vandenberg fire officials have requested support from Lompoc City, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, Los Padres National Forest, California Highway Patrol and the Santa Barbara Sheriffs' Office. Three helicopters are reported to be on scene and aerial tankers have been requested.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
