10/25/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Vandenberg's Surf Beach, closed since Oct. 22 in the wake of a fatal shark attack, will reopen to the public at 8 a.m. today.

During the three-day closure period, base conservation law enforcement officers increased patrols of the base beaches; there were no observed or reported shark sightings off of base beaches during the closure period.

In addition to existing signage identifying no lifeguard on duty and outlining beach rules, base conservation law enforcement officials will post additional signs at the beaches reading, "Warning: recent shark attack--swim, surf at your own risk."

Tips for reducing the risk of shark attack may be found on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Web site at the following address: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sharks/Press_Kit_Sharks.htm.

Vandenberg's Minuteman and Wall Beaches, only accessible to base personnel, remain closed as part of an order closing down all outdoor recreational activities in order to facilitate events related to Vandenberg's two-week operational readiness and unit compliance inspections, which kicked off Oct. 24.
