8/11/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.  -- Vandenberg will host the 22nd Annual Texas Blowout scheduled for Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cocheo Park here.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will pay for this year's Operation Kids Christmas, an annual event in which men and women of Vandenberg provide Christmas presents and holiday meals to more than 200 local underprivileged children.

This year's blowout, hosted by 392nd Training Squadron, will consist of family-fun events. Activities include cow-pie throwing contest, BBQ, bake sale, silent auction and a car/bike show. Kid's events will include a bouncing castle, rock wall, face painting and games galore.

Operation Kids Christmas originated in 1959 when Mike Petlansky, from the Air Force Logistics Command test site office here, began Operation Big Brother with a $1,800 budget and 100 children in attendance. Today, the operating budget is approximately $23,000 and more than 200 children attend annually.

The event is open to anyone with base access.

NOTE TO EDITORS:

Media interested in attending should call Public Affairs at 805-606-3595. An escort will depart the Visitor Control Center at the Main Gate of Vandenberg Aug. 13 at 11:30 a.m.
